I'm sick of seeing stories about men and women getting judged by their hair. I'm sick of seeing women get fired because they chose to wear an afro. I'm sick of seeing teenagers getting banned from their prom because they wore braids to school. I'm sick of seeing stories of a teenager being forced to cut his dreadlocks before a wrestling match. I'm sick of seeing these stories.
How dare people claim that these styles are unkept? Do they not have any idea how much work goes into afros, braids, dreadlocks, wash n go's, and twist outs? They must not know because if they knew the work and time that went into these styles, they wouldn't complain again. They wouldn't call them unkept. Unkept is not detangling one's hair. Unkept is letting one's matte up. Unkept is never washing one's hair.
Professionalism is not defined by one's hair. It's defined by the service they give. I've seen many people wear their natural hair while on the job and I never blinked twice. I even complimented them because it's a wonderful sight to see.
Most people in America, even black folk, will see straighter hair as more attractive. That's the only reason why others get so much heat for wearing anything else. It's not because it's unprofessional. It's because it's not popular which blows my mind because it's the 21st century. By the year 2019, we as human beings should be nicer to each other. When, as a country, are we going to stop putting all our focus on the dollar bill and start focusing more on morals?
When will natural hair be praised everywhere? When will curly hair be praised everywhere? When will people realize that just because one person doesn't like something or understand it doesn't mean it's bad or wrong. A woman should not get fired because she decides to wear her natural hair because her boss doesn't like it or isn't used to it. Would a woman with straight hair get fired even though her boss has naturally curly hair?
I don't think so.
How can someone say that the hair that naturally comes out of our head isn't professional? That's like saying having brown eyes is unprofessional or not shaving our legs is unprofessional. We are not obligated to change something that naturally happens to us.
I need for people to wake up. I need people to become more aware. I need people to have morals. I need the world to be a lot less stupid.
